FootballScoop is proud to announce that Pat Ivey (Missouri) as the 2013 FootballScoop Strength & Conditioning Coach of the Year presented by ProGrass.
Ivey has been in charge of Missouri football's strength program since 2005, a time that not so coincidentally happens to coincide with the rise of Missouri football. Look at it this way, it isn't an accident Gary Pinkel was 22-25 in the four seasons before Ivey took over, and 80-38 with seven seasons of eight wins or more and three conference championship appearances in the nine seasons since.
Those who know him are effusive in their praise of Ivey's loyalty and humility - he's always looking for ways to empower those who work under him - and his never-ending quest for improvement, both of himself and the players he coaches.
Ivey recently completed his Ph.D. while running Missouri's strength program.
"There's no question I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for Pat," said former Ivey protege, 2011 FootballScoop Strength & Conditioning Coach of the Year and Stanford strength coach Shannon Turley. "He's someone I still seek counsel from when faced with difficult decisions."
In fact, each of the last two FootballScoop Strength & Conditioning Coach of the Year winners - Turley and Baylor's Kaz Kazadi - previously worked under Ivey.
Ivey is very receptive of new methods and embraces technology and the latest research in an effort to put his players in the best possible position to win games. As a result, Ivey is universally loved and respected throughout the Tigers' locker room.
"This is a very deserving honor for Pat Ivey, he's without a doubt one of the top performance coaches in the country, and he's a vital part of our success on an everyday basis," said Pinkel. "Our student-athletes trust him and know that what he puts together for them will make them better on the field, and he is also a very important part of our program from a mindset standpoint, as he's constantly working with our team to help them with their mental approach to preparation and leadership."
Ivey played defensive end at Missouri from 1993-95, where he earned the distinction of being the strongest player in Mizzou history. After a two-season stint with the San Diego Chargers, Ivey became a graduate assistant in Missouri's strength program, working his way up to assistant director of strength and conditioning in 2001.
After spending 2002-04 as the head strength coach at Tulsa, Ivey returned to Missouri in 2005, and was promoted to assistant athletic director for athletic performance in 2007.
The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by ProGrass are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. The finalists (Rob Glass - Oklahoma State and Ivey) were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel. The prior winners selected this year's winner.
Ivey will receive his award and be recognized at an event at the AFCA Convention in January.
