Lane Kiffin hired as Alabama's offensive coordinator

Every once in a while, life offers up something that appears too good to be true yet actually ends up being true. That happened today. Lane Kiffin is going to be Alabama's offensive coordinator.

The prevailing thought following Kiffin's unceremonious ouster at USC was that he'd assume a relatively anonymous role as an NFL position coach, and maybe even follow in the footsteps of Tennessee head coach-turned-Dallas Cowboys receiver coach Derek Dooley and grow a beard, but Tuscaloosa is actually Kiffin's ideal landing spot. He and Saban are already close: see their multi-day pow wow in mid-December.

Saban doesn't let his assistants speak with the media, leaving Kiffin to put his head down and do what he does best: call plays (for an extremely talented roster) and recruit (in an extremely target rich environment).

Kiffin's USC offense may have lost its way in 2013, but he's still an incredibly successful play-caller and easily the most accomplished named on the market. And his ability to recruit has never been questioned.

For the record, Alabama visits Tennessee on October 25.
