Typically it's the writers' job to make the introspective observations at SEC Media Days, but on Tuesday afternoon Kevin Sumlin made the best one of the day.
Trevor Knight is at Texas A&M for a reason. The quarterback who led Oklahoma past Alabama in the 2014 Sugar Bowl lost his job because he deserved to lose is. Because he, as Sumlin put it, couldn't tame his predisposition for gunslinging with the ball in his hand.
At the same time, Trevor Knight is Texas A&M's starting quarterback for a reason. Two former five-star recruits, each with the depth chart clear and multiple years as a starter assured to him, decided to transfer.
Knight and A&M needed each other, and each offered something the other needed. For Knight, that was a starting role. For A&M, that was, as Sumlin said through a bright smile multiple times through the afternoon, was leadership and a drama-free off-season.
A lack of drama at the quarterback position is a new phenomenon for Sumlin's now five-year tenure in College Station. With a new offensive coordinator, a second year under defensive coordinator John Chavis with strength at the defensive line and in the secondary and a steady hand at quarterback, Sumlin thinks his 2016 team could surprise people.
