Florida State baseball coach Mike Martin walked away from a wreck that, a few inches here or there, would have left him in a much worse state on Wednesday morning.
“I am so appreciative,” Martin said. “You don’t expect it. You are driving to work, like you do every day. I could be dead.”
According to the Tallahassee Democrat, Martin was driving to work in his Jeep Cherokee when a truck crossed the median and struck him near the left front wheel - next to where the 70-year-old baseball coach was seated behind the steering wheel.
One of the first to respond was Seminoles football coach Jimbo Fisher, also on his way to work.
The other driver was taken by ambulance to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, but Martin enjoyed the good fortune of walking away.
His wife, Carol, put the morning in perspective.
“She walked in and said, ‘Boy, this was a tough morning,” Martin said. "We lost our closer and you got hit by a truck.”
Fisher can commiserate. His quarterback and Martin's closer are the same person - soon-to-be NFL first-round draft pick Jameis Winston.
