A move that has been in the works became official on Saturday, as Auburn announced the addition of Florida defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson to Gus Malzahn's staff. Robinson will coach cornerbacks for the Tigers. The move was officially announced just minutes after Florida's Birmingham Bowl victory over East Carolina went final.
We reported back in December that new Florida head coach Jim McElwain was trying to keep Robinson on staff, and AL.com noted Saturday that McElwain brought Robinson on several key recruiting trips last month.
But ultimately the pull to return under his alma mater - and continue working under Will Muschamp - was enough to get him in Auburn's particular shade of orange and blue.
"I'm very excited about returning to Auburn where I played, received my degree and was a graduate assistant," Robinson said in a statement. "Auburn has provided me so many opportunities and I'm excited to be able to give back to a place that has meant so much to me. I have a lot of respect for coach Malzahn and I'm looking forward to working for him. My family and I are glad to be back home."
Robinson played at Auburn, garnering an All-SEC nod in 2002 before spending three years with the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He jumped into coaching as a graduate assistant under Tommy Tuberville from 2006-07 before spending a year apiece as the defensive backs coach at Western Kentucky, Southern Miss and Texas Tech. Muschamp hired Robinson as an original staff member in 2011, and Florida posted pass efficiency defense rankings of 28th, second and eighth in under his direction. Auburn rated 62nd in that department this season.
A Miami native, Robinson is also regarded as a high-level recruiter.
