Back in May, a few industry leaders led by Brett Ledbetter got together in Chicago to lead the What Drives Winning conferences, which has become an annual event dating back to 2015. There, some of the most well respected minds in coaching, psychology, and a host of other areas get together to share ideas in a Ted-talk like conference of sorts.
Speakers highlighted at the event include Bill Belichick, Mike Gundy, PJ Fleck, and Bob Stoops.
Today, part II of the sit down talk with Stoops came across my timeline, and in it he shares a wealth of knowledge spanning from how Bob Stoops the coach is almost an entirely different persona than Bob Stoops the person, what it was like to coach with Steve Spurrier while the two had things rolling at Florida, and also what it was like to grow up a Stoops.
Perhaps most interesting is how Stoops wraps up the video, explaining how he knew it was the right time to step away. Stoops started by sharing how he went from having no thoughts about stepping away to suddenly waking up or heading to bed with thoughts of retirement on his mind.
Ultimately, the more he analyzed it, the more he realized the situation was perfect to step away; they had the right successor in Lincoln Riley ready to step in, he had a mature and talented team, and perhaps most importantly, he knew that all of the Sooner assistants coaches could stick around with their jobs. Those three things lining up are incredibly rare for whe a head coach decides to leave.
Give the sit down with Stoops a listen in the clip.
