Texas had two scholarships to hand out, and, as become custom under Tom Herman's staff, they did so in a big way.
First, Texas called walk-on defensive back Jamarquis Durst to talk about a trip he made to Jamaica. Lo and behold, it was a ruse to put the Conroe, Texas, defensive back by way of Tarleton State on scholarship.
"I wasn't supposed to be here today in front of y'all, man," Durst said. "So many people wrote me off. Y'all make me love being here every day."
Second, the Texas staff had a hedge fund manager and brother of wide receivers coach Corby Meekins to speak to the team. He happened to be the internship boss of walk-on wide receiver Philipp Moeller, a finance and mechanical engineering double major from Plano, Texas. "When you left this summer, I turned to my partners and I said, 'I know this kid has only been here for a year, but I would hire that guy.' Because of his knowledge, because of your hard work, because of your attention to process and execution, but most of all because of your heart," he said. "And Phil, it turns out that I'm not the only person who feels like you satisfy all these requirements. It sounds like the Texas coaches do too, so it's my pleasure to tell you that you're now a scholarship player."
Can you imagine a better video to watch if you're a parent?
Trick question: You can't, because there isn't one.
