Depending on where you are, and the offensive style of play, college and high school programs treat their quarterbacks during practice very differently.
Most teams protect their signal callers during practice and shield them from most (if not all) contact, while there are certainly a few programs that take the opposite approach and make their quarterbacks just as live as a running back or receiver.
For the coaches that are part of programs that want to protect their quarterbacks from contact during practice, how would you feel about your QB pushing a pile to help the ball carrier get a few extra yards?
That's what happened at Texas yesterday, with quarterback Shane Beuchele as he attempted to push a pile. Most guys don't want their quarterbacks to be involved in something like that, and would prefer to keep them out of harms way as much as possible.
...but not Longhorns offensive coordinator Tim Beck, who noted that he didn't mind the physicality displayed by Buechele, as I noticed
Shane Buechele was seen pushing the pile on a play at Texas' practice today. OC Tim Beck didn't mind that physicality from his QB. #HookEmpic.twitter.com/IlKoHvLF0U

">Danny Davis of the Austin American-Statesman point out.
"We're competing, and so if a guy's a real competitor, they're going to dig, scratch, claw, fight and do whatever they've got to do to win. That's still what we're looking for. We're looking for the 11 toughest guys and the most competitive 11 guys," Beck explained.
"I don't care what they've done in the past, where they've come from, it doesn't really matter. They 11 guys who get on the field, they're going to be ready."
