Terry Bowden is 63 years old, he's been the head coach at five different universities, but he's not done learning.
Bowden is pursuing a Master's degree in athletic leadership at Clemson University and will work with the football program as an unpaid graduate intern, FootballScoop has confirmed. The news was first reported by TigerNet. Bowden was seen on the sideline during Clemson's spring game.
The son of Hall of Fame head coach Bobby Bowden and the younger brother of Dabo Swinney's predecessor and former boss, Tommy Bowden, Terry Bowden worked most recently as the head coach at Akron from 2012-18. He led the Zips to a MAC East championship in 2017 -- the program's first since 2005 -- but was not retained after a 4-8 campaign in 2018.
Bowden's head coaching experience spans more than 35 years, as his first head coaching job came at Salem University in 1983 when he was 27 years old. Bowden went 19-13 and won a West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship in 1985, a stint that propelled him to head coaching jobs at Samford and Auburn, where he was a combined 92-40-2 from 1987-98.
He then worked in media for a decade before returning to the game as the head coach at North Alabama, where he was 29-9 with three Division II playoff appearances in as many seasons, a string of success that led to the Akron job.
