Mike Sanford is expected to hire his father, Mike Sanford, Sr., to join his Western Kentucky staff, sources tell FootballScoop.
Sanford, Sr., is currently the head coach at Indiana State, where he has compiled an 18-30 record in four seasons. He would join a growing list of Division I coaches leaving head jobs to take assistant coaching positions at higher levels, a group that includes: Dan Enos, who left Central Michigan to become Arkansas's offensive coordinator; Pete Lembo, who left Ball State to become Maryland's assistant head coach and special teams coordinator; and Joe Moorhead, who left Fordham to become Penn State's offensive coordinator.
Of course, there are obvious factors here that make this move different from the others.
Sanford, Jr., is the father of a growing family -- he and his wife Anne-Marie are the parents of three children ages six and younger -- so the chance to work on his son's first staff and be around his grandkids had obvious appeal for Sanford, Sr.
It is not immediately known which position Sanford, Sr., will take, but he owns offensive coordinator experience at Long Beach State, Stanford, Utah and Louisville.
This will be the second time the two Sanford men have coached on the same staff. Sanford, Jr., jumped into coaching as a graduate assistant on his father's staff at UNLV in 2005 before going on to Stanford on Jim Harbaugh's original staff, Yale, Western Kentucky on Willie Taggart's staff, Stanford again under David Shaw, Boise State and Notre Dame.
