Source: Carl Pelini heading back to Youngstown State...as head coach in waiting (Featured)

Source tells FootballScoop that Bowling Green defensive coordinator Carl Pelini is leaving BGSU to return to Youngstown State, where he is expected to be named defensive coordinator...and either expressly or with the understanding that he is now head coach in waiting.

Pelini had served as his brother Bo's defensive coordinator at Youngstown before leaving for the opportunity to become defensive coordinator for Mike Jinks at BG. When Jinks was let go, Pelini served as interim head coach until Scot Loeffler was hired. Loeffler retained Pelini; but now sources tell FootballScoop he's back to Youngstown.

In two seasons as head coach at FAU Pelini won 5 games. He went 2-3 as interim head coach at BG this season.

Pelini served as Bo's defensive coordinator at Nebraska and at Youngstown from 2015-17.

At Youngstown State, Bo Pelini won 12 games in 2016; but his 2015, 2017 and 2018 combined to average 5 wins, dropping to a low mark of 4-7 this season. Other than that 2016 season (when they finished 3rd in conference), his teams have finished tied for 6th twice and in 7th place in their conference.
