Report: Wofford head coach Mike Ayers to retire (Featured)

Wofford head coach Mike Ayers will announce his retirement today, according to WSPA-TV. The school has called a news conference for 1:30 p.m. ET.

Ayers is an institution at Wofford, in the Southern Conference and FCS at large. He has been the Terriers' head coach since 1988, and during that time racked up a 200-138-1 mark with five SoCon championships -- including this season. He led Wofford to a 10-3 mark this season and a second consecutive trip to the FCS Quarterfinals.

The club made eight playoff trips under Ayers, all of them coming since 2003.

Combined with his three seasons as the head coach at East Tennessee State, Ayers's 211 all-time wins make him the third-winningest active coach in FCS.

Ayers was named the SoCon Coach of the Year five times and won the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award in 2003.

Ayers's staff was among the most stable in all of college football. Offensive coordinator Wade Lang recently completed his 30th year on staff and 28th as offensive coordinator. Offensive line coach Eric Nash has spent 15 seasons on staff, wide receivers coach Freddie Brown seven, and six other coaches had prior relationships with the program, either as players or were promoted to their current spots from within the program.

As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
