Update: WKU has announced the move.
"I would like to thank Mike for his dedication and passion leading our football program over the last two years," WKU AD Todd Stewart said. "His commitment to bettering the lives of our student-athletes is unquestioned. However, based on a complete review of the total body of work of our program over the last two years and assessing the likelihood of meeting our future expectations, I felt it was time that we make a change in leadership. This was not an easy decision and was not made lightly."
Western Kentucky has fired head coach Mike Sanford, sources told FootballScoop Sunday. SB Nation's Steven Godfrey first reported the news.
Earlier this month, the Bowling Green Daily Newsreported Sanford needed to win his final two games -- at home against UTEP, at Louisiana Tech -- to save his job. WKU indeed won both of those games, but it still wasn't reportedly enough for Sanford to hold on.
After a 6-7 debut, Western Kentucky went 3-9 in Sanford's second season. The program made Sanford the youngest head coach in FBS after back-to-back Conference USA titles led Jeff Brohm to take the Purdue job.
