Mike Gundy started the satellite camp craze when he partnered with Mary Hardin-Baylor to get his Oklahoma State Cowboys into Central Texas many years back. So it makes sense Gundy would be the first coach to kick the practice to a new level.
Say hello to the age of "mega-camps."
“I’m shooting for the Walmart of football camps,” Gundy told USA Today. “It makes sense. If you have a son and you can send him to a camp for $30 and he can be seen by all those different schools, it’s a pretty good deal, right?”
The first of its kind, two Andrew Jacksons will get campers in front of three Big 12 staffs, two SEC staffs, two Pac-12 staffs, one Big Ten staff, one Mountain West staff, one Sun Belt staff, one Southland staff and one Division III staff. The camps are open to the first 300 juniors and seniors hailing from every major area of Texas: Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, plus stops in Central and East Texas.
One-stop shopping, all for a low, low price? The slogan of Gundy's mega-camp should read, "Save money. Camp better."
Elsewhere in the satellite camp world, Georgia and Michigan, bitter enemies of the Great Satellite War of 2016, are reportedly partnering for a camp in Atlanta, and we reported earlier Friday Ole Miss and Mississippi State will partner with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College for a camp in southern Mississippi.
