Before joining the Indiana staff, Greg Frey worked under Rich Rodriguez at the University of Michigan coaching the offensive line, so when Jim Harbaugh showed interest in the Hoosiers offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator, it didn't take long for Frey to make up his mind.
With new Hoosier's offensive coordinator Mike DeBord on staff under the new leadership of Tom Allen, Frey admitted on WTKA-AM 1050 that he was open to leaving for a "special" opportunity.
When Harbaugh reached out, that special opportunity presented itself.
"My process on deciding to take the job and come back was about 18 seconds into the conversation."
“He said 'I have a plan,' and I said 'Okay, I'm in. Let’s roll. I know your plans and I've seen them work, so let's go.' It’s hard to explain but when I decided my first time to play for coach [Bobby] Bowden one of the best coaches ever, it took me about 30 seconds to figure out the guy that I should go play. It took me about 18 with coach Harbaugh."
"This is the guy I wanted to go work for, the guy that I believe in. I want to be there. People know that I was doing some nice things at IU and I really love my players down there."
