No. 3 Georgia hosts Arkansas State on Saturday (noon ET, ESPN2), and the Bulldogs are encouraging their fans to trade in their traditional red and black for pink.
Wendy Anderson, the wife of Red Wolves head coach Blake Anderson, died of breast cancer on Aug. 19, and Blake spent nearly three weeks away from the team mourning her passing. He made a dramatic return to the team ahead of Arkansas State's win over UNLV last week, and the Georgia game will represent his second game since Wendy's death.
To support the Andersons, Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer, a non-profit group that raises money to provide free mammograms for women in need, is encouraging fans to wear pink to the game.
"Bulldog Nation, help us get the word out. Wendy Anderson, the wife of Arkansas State head coach Blake Anderson, passed away on August 19th after a two year battle with breast cancer. We want to show Coach Anderson that, regardless of the score on Saturday, he and his family are in our thoughts and prayers. If you're headed to Sanford Stadium on Saturday, please consider wearing pink in honor of Wendy Anderson."
The Georgia football account then retweeted the message to its near million followers.
There is recent precedent for college football programs mobilizing their fans to create moving gestures for people in need: the Iowa Wave, a tradition that began in 2017 where all Hawkeye fans turn and wave to the nearby Stead Family Children's Hospital at the end of each first quarter. And, of course, pink become a staple on football fields starting in 2009 when the NFL devoted the month of October to breast cancer awareness by adorning its fields, players, coaches and officials with pink accessories.
But I can't recall an entire 90,000-seat stadium wearing pink, and if Georgia is able to pull it off it will lead to a truly great moment on Saturday.
