LSU will name Ed Orgeron as its full-time head coach today, sources confirmed to FootballScoop on Saturday morning.
The Tigers have called a noon CT press conference to introduce their next coach.
Orgeron is targeting Lane Kiffin as his offensive coordinator sources also confirm to FootballScoop. Kiffin receiving a head coaching position would obviously derail this plan.
As of last night Tom Herman remained the principal target of the search sources confirmed to FootballScoop; but Herman called this morning to let LSU know Texas was now in the picture, LSU AD Joe Alleva decided at that time that they already had the man they wanted.
Sources add to FootballScoop that Orgeron performed masterfully on his plan in consistently reaching out to recruits, donors, administrators and fans throughout his tenure as interim head coach. The plan was not a two month plan; but truly a multi-year plan created, and largely orchestrated by Orgeron and the man he brought in, Derek Ponamsky (who will always be referred affectionately to as simply "the Prince") and director of player personnel Austin Thomas. Orgeron has worked with Thomas at USC and LSU and has told FootballScoop on multiple occasions Thomas is the best in the business at what he does. His players & their recruits love Coach O. They see a leader who genuinely loves his state, his school and his people. This hire will be received very well by players, young and old.
Orgeron, of course, served as LSU's interim head coach for the final two-thirds of this season, guiding the Tigers to a 5-2 mark -- with wins over, among others, Ole Miss, Arkansas and Texas A&M -- following a 2-2 start.
Orgeron aimed for the full-time post from his Sept. 25 announcement as the Tigers' interim head coach and carried himself as such. While his candidacy took a blow after LSU's 16-10 loss to Florida on Nov. 19, a 54-39 blowout of Texas A&M on Thursday night coupled with Tom Herman's interest in Texas led the Tigers to name Orgeron their full-time coach on Saturday.
