Sunday, a day after a record setting performance by the LSU offense where they put up a program SEC record of 634 total yards, interim head coach Ed Orgeron told ESPN's Chris Low that he's confident that he'll get the interim tag removed, provided they continue to take care of business.
"Listen, this thing here, I'm going to get it. If we do what we need to do, I feel in my heart I'm going to get it. If I don't, it's because we didn't do well enough and I don't deserve it."
"Really, we control our own destiny, and I feel like we have a job here, and we have a right to earn it. If we earn it, we ought to get it. If we don't earn it, I get that. I know what the expectations are here. They're my expectations, the same expectations I had growing up in this state and cheering for the Tigers."
For those that need a refresher, Orgeron is on his second stint as an interim head coach, after serving as the head coach at Ole Miss from 2005-2007 where he went 10-25. His first tenure as an interim head coach came at USC following the dismissal of Lane Kiffin in 2013. He led the Trojans for eight games, and took over a 3-2 team and led the team on an impressive 6-2 charge to end the year. Many thought that was enough to warrant a long look at removing the interim tag, but at the end of the day, USC opted to bring in Steve Sarkisian.
The big difference between his time at USC and his time at LSU, where he has been on staff since Janaury of 2014, so far? According to what Oregeron told Low, he feels wanted in Baton Rouge.
"The difference is they want me here at LSU. I never felt in my heart that they wanted me at USC until the very end, and then Haden pulled the plug. I thought all the time I was fighting an uphill battle. They always saw me more as a stopgap."
