Texas Tom Herman

Tenth Assistant
In a move rivaled (so far) only by Ohio State's hiring of Washington State defensive coordinator Alex Grinch, Texas pulled Auburn offensive line coach Herb Hand away from the Plains and made him co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

2018 Changes
It's no secret what the issue was in 2017 -- the offense. The Longhorns finished last season ranked 104th nationally in yards per play and 52nd in scoring, and that number includes eight non-offensive touchdowns. A school that put out a 1,000-yard rusher every year for a quarter century straight was led in rushing by a true freshman who began the year as a backup quarterback -- and rushed for all of 381 yards on the season. Somewhere out there Earl Campbell and Roosevelt Leaks are weeping.

Herman is not blind to this issue. Far from it, as the Hand hiring attests. Herman also worked to bring in former Texas A&M offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone as a quality control assistant before Mazzone reunited with Kevin Sumlin at Arizona. Herman also took a more active role in the offense in the Texas Bowl. (And yet the Horns still averaged 3.94 yards per play and punted on eight straight possessions in that game.)

As it's currently constructed, Texas now employs an offensive coordinator, a co-offensive coordinator, a passing game coordinator, a run game coordinator and two offensive line coaches, plus a head coach who was formerly an offensive coordinator. Who's the boss here? Is it Beck, is it Hand, is it Herman, or is it another coaching hire still to come?

Also, it will be interesting to see what Herman does with assistant director of player personnel Bryan Carrington. Carrington was promoted to an interim assistant coach in January so he could hit the recruiting trail, where he drew rave reviews from recruits and parents alike. Finding an increased role for him would be a good move, but where?
