Matt Rhule and Baylor, who are off to a 4-0 start in 2019, have agreed to a contract extension, the school announced tonight.
The new amendment to Rhule's seven-year deal results in an extension taking him through March 2028.
Baylor President Linda A. Livingstone shared the following via the school's release.
"We could not be more proud of how Coach Rhule has embraced the Baylor Family and led our football program over the past two-plus seasons. There is significant positive momentum for Baylor not only on the football field, but also for our student-athletes in the classroom and throughout the community. Coach Rhule truly embraces the mission of Baylor University and instills Christian values in our student-athletes as we prepare champions for life."
Rhule took over Baylor as the program was staring in the face of the scandal that took place under Art Briles. Now in his third season he has things rolling. He went 1-11 in year one facing tremendous odds, then jumped to 7-6 in year two with a bowl trip, and is coming off a win over Iowa State this past weekend to improve to 4-0.
Rhule has done such an impressive job leading, and building Baylor through adversity that he's garnered interest in NFL jobs.
Considering what Baylor was facing when they hired Rhule, it's tough to look back and think of a better "fit," and Rhule has helped to prove the decision makers in Waco right with his on and off-the-field results so far.
It will be interesting to see the terms and whether this is a long term lock in at Baylor, or if it leaves the door cracked for other opportunities.
The contract will go to the Baylor Board of Regents November 1st for final approval.
