Teaching Open Gap vs. Closed Gap Doubles in Duo Runs: The success of the Duo concept is strictly tied to the movements created on double teams at the line of scrimmage. While some coaches subscribe purely to teaching gap scheme principles in their Duo play, the staff at Minnesota Duluth has found a unique way of implementing its open-gap and closed-gap combination principles used in the inside zone with its Duo scheme. The difference lies in the backside combination in Duo works to the running back’s read. That’s why a great deal of time is spent teaching linemen to understand departure angles when working to the second level. Duluth may be one of the only programs in the Midwest that doesn’t run an A-gap power play, so offensive line coach Loren Endsley teaches Duo with zone principles and provides perhaps one of our most detailed installs on the concept. Duluth installed Duo scheme for the first time this season and concept this season to generate over 240 yards on the ground per game. Read more.
