With Independence CC (JC - KS) head coach Kiyoshi Harris off to Boise State in an off-field role, one of the top junior college programs in the country found itself looking for a new leader.
We understand that they won't have to look far.
Sources tell FootballScoop that assistant head coach / defensive coordinator / secondary coach Jason Martin is expected to become the new head coach at Indy.
Martin, who got a little bit of screen time with his family on the hit Netflix series Last Chance U in seasons 3 and 4, has served as the program's defensive coordinator the past four seasons. He added the assistant head coach title following Harris' promotion to head coach heading into the 2019 season.
Before joining the Indy staff, Martin served as the secondary coach at Garden City CC (JC - KS). Prior to that, he worked in a quality control capacity with the defensive backs at UCLA.
Martin will take over a program in great shape. Before leaving, Harris led a remarkable turnaround in his first season (junior colleges opted to not play in the fall of 2020), going from 2-8 in Jason Brown's last year, to 8-2 under Harris.
Martin inherits a program trending upwards once again, as they finished #9 in the final 2019 Junior College rankings.
Sources tell us that special teams coordinator / linebackers coach Steve McCollom, who has been on the staff a few seasons after previously working on the Toledo staff, will fill the defensive coordinator role and will also add the title of assistant head coach.
