Tommy Spangler's long-tenured run atop the Presbyterian College football program is over, multiple sources tell FootballScoop.
Spangler had logged almost two decades with the Blue Hose program, serving in roles on two separate occasions as defensive coordinator as well as a pair of different runs as head coach of the team.
Spangler compiled a 54-52 ledger as head coach; that included this year's 4-3 spring season. After a difficult 1-3 opening to the unprecedented spring mini-season, the Blue Hose closed the year with three consecutive wins including an 29-24 victory against Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs-bound Davidson, the Pioneer Football League champion who earlier this spring clubbed Presbyterian by 17 points.
The Blue Hose have been transitioning from their previous residency in the Big South Conference into their new affiliation within the Pioneer Football League.
They are scheduled to be a full member of the league at the onset of their fall season. Presbyterian has games lined up against both Campbell College and the University of Dayton, in addition to their PFL slate and other contests that have not yet been publicly disclosed.
The Blue Hose's best season under Spangler came in 2005, when they advanced into the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs.
Two seasons later, Spangler took over as defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech where he worked for, among others, Derek Dooley, and was retained at Tech even after Dooley exited Ruston, Louisiana, to take over the University of Tennessee football program.
Spangler's previous career stops also included multiple roles at Georgia Southern and a graduate assistant position to start his career at his alma mater, Georgia, where Spangler was part of the Bulldogs' 1980 national championship team.
Presbyterian's targets, per sources in college football, are expected to include, among others, Virginia Military Institute head coach Scott Wachenheim, who also has been linked to the vacancy at Southern Conference member Western Carolina.
