Update: Sources tell FootballScoop Mack plans to interview more that just Porter for the job. Porter is a strong candidate.
Mack Brown is expected to hire Larry Porter as North Carolina's running backs coach, sources told FootballScoop on Sunday.
Porter is a familiar face both to Brown and to Tar Heels fans.
Brown hired Porter to coach running backs at Texas in 2013, which turned out to be the last of Brown's 16 seasons in Austin. Porter landed at North Carolina following the dismissal of Brown's staff, where he remained from 2014-16.
North Carolina went 25-15 in those years, including an 11-3 mark in 2015 that stands as UNC's best season since Brown's first tenure in Chapel Hill. Elijah Hood was a First Team All-ACC performer that year, rushing for 1,463 yards and 17 touchdowns on 6.68 yards a carry.
Porter then went to Auburn, where he coached tight ends and running backs for Gus Malzahn's Tiger teams.
North Carolina is on the market for a running backs coach following Robert Gillespie's departure for Alabama, which was first reported earlier Sunday afternoon. Gillespie fills a hole vacated by Charles Huff's hiring as the head coach at Marshall.
Porter first began coaching running backs at UT-Martin in 1998. He has coached the position for six schools in addition to UNC and Texas, and served as his alma mater Memphis's head coach from 2010-11.
