Sources: Kent State's Jeremiah Johnson heading to Northern Iowa (Jeremiah Johnson)

Jeremiah Johnson spent last season as the defensive coordinator at Kent State.

With the departure of Sean Lewis to Colorado to be Deion Sanders' offensive coordinator, Johnson was initially retained by new head coach Kenni Burns as special teams coordinator and safeties coach.

However, sources tell FootballScoop that Johnson still has a strong desire to call the defense, and is heading back to Northern Iowa to be their defensive coordinator.

Johnson previously spent 11 seasons as part of the UNI staff.

He returns to a program where he has a previous relationship with head coach Mark Farley, and also engineered some of the top defenses in FCS before leaving for Kent State.

The season before his departure, UNI ranked 14th nationally in total defense and 13th nationally in scoring defense and ranked among the top four nationally in creating turnovers.
