Rob Aurich, who helped Idaho climb near the top of the FCS national rankings this season and was instrumental in the Vandals' deep postseason FCS Playoffs run, is making the leap to the Football Bowls Subdivision.
Sources tell FootballScoop that Aurich is going to be hired to join Sean Lewis's San Diego State staff.
Aurich, FootballScoop was told, will coach the edge position for the Aztecs, who are finalizing the hire of Eric Schmidt as defensive coordinator.
Schmidt is expected to handle the linebackers at SDSU, once he finishes his current duties with Washington, the nation's No. 2 team in the College Football Playoff.
Aurich previously coached at South Dakota, and he won a pair of national championships during his playing days at Minnesota Duluth.
He has an extensive background coaching both on the defensive side of the ball and with an expertise in special teams.
Lewis was hired earlier this month to run the SDSU program after Brady Hoke departed after the 2023 season. Lewis arrived at San Diego after a season as Deion Sanders's offensive coordinator at Colorado and with previous head coaching experience from his time in the MAC.
