Sources: Georgia Southern adding former NFL wideout to offensive staff (Damion Willis)

Clay Helton keeps making significant moves as he transitions into his third season atop the Georgia Southern football program.

After recently hiring the very well-regarded Clint Trickett, a former FBS offensive coordinator who played collegiately at both Florida State and West Virginia, Helton and Trickett now are bringing in a former NFL wideout to the Georgia Southern staff, sources tell FootballScoop.

Damion Willis, who initially played for Trickett at East Mississippi Community College before going on to star at Troy, is joining the Eagles' offensive staff, per sources. He's set to become a graduate assistant working with the Georgia Southern's wideouts.

After starring at EMCC and then at Troy, Willis spent multiple years with a handful of NFL franchises and also was on the roster with a pair of XFL/UFL franchises.

In the NFL, Willis had stints with the Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Denver Broncos, New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Trickett is Georgia Southern's new passing game coordinator, also working with the program's tight ends and inside receivers. He previously helped guide the Marshall Thundering Herd to multiple bowl appearances in his time as that program's offensive coordinator.

Georgia Southern, which played in the Myrtle Beach Bowl to cap its second season under Helton and has advanced to postseason play in both years under Helton, is set to open the 2024 campaign with a compelling intersectional contest at home against Boise State Aug. 31.
