With yesterday's news that Klayton Adams was opting to stay with the Colts and not head to Tempe as Herm Edwards' new offensive line coach, as had been widely reported previously, the Sun Devils search began to head in a new direction.
Sources tell FootballScoop that Arizona State is now planning to hire away Syracuse offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh.
Cavanaugh, who is in his third season on Dino Babers' staff with the Orange, has deep ties in PAC-12 territory as the offensive line coach at Oregon State for ten seasons.
With the Beavers, Cavanaugh led a line that set a number of offensive records, including single season and career PAC-12 records for passing yards while also producing a number of 1,000 rushers as well.
From Oregon State, Cavanaugh followed Mike Riley to Nebraska for a few seasons before joining the Orange staff.
Other college stops for Cavanaugh include Albany (FCS - NY), Wesleyan College (CT), Alma College (D-III - MI), Murray State (FCS), Sacred Heart (FCS), Ferris State (D-II - MI), and Hawaii. He also spent two seasons in the NFL as the assistant offensive line coach with the Chargers in the late 90's as well.
Cavanaugh will be filling the role Dave Christensen held the past few seasons.
