Report: Tom Arth is staying at Akron, and not heading to the NFL

Update >>Arth has released a statement that, well...read it for yourself.

Last week, a report shared that the Chargers and new head coach Brandon Staley were targeting Akron head coach Tom Arth for spot on the staff. Staley served as Arth's defensive coordinator at John Carroll just a few seasons ago before the current Chargers head coach started his rapid climb up the NFL ladder. Pete Thamel tweets that Arth has decided to stay at Akron, marking a huge coup for the program. Arth is in the midst of a rebuild with the Zips and went 1-17 the past two seasons, including an 0-12 mark in 2019 and 1-5 season this past fall. From 2013-16 he went 40-8 at John Carroll (D-III - OH), including a run to the national semis in his final season with the program. Following that historic season, he made the jump to the FCS level, taking over the UT-Chattanooga program for two seasons, going 3-8 in 2017 and 6-5 in 2018. When the job with the Zips came open following the dismissal of Terry Bowden in early December of 2018, it presented an opportunity to come closer to home for Arth and coach at the major college level in the MAC.
