The name Ladell Betts will ring a bell for a lot of Big Ten fans.
The former Hawkeye running back made an immediate impact at Iowa, playing in all 11 of the team's games after redshirting his first season on campus and set records for rushing yards in a game and a season by a Hawkeye freshman. He earned a starting role the next season, capturing team co-MVP honors and was selected to the All-Big Ten second team. His Junior season he accounted for ever single yard of the Hawkeye's rushing offense and he capped his senior year with more post season honors and was a captain for the team as well.
When you're talking about some of the most accomplished running backs in Iowa history the last few decades, Betts is certainly in the conversation.
He was drafted in the second round by the Washington Redskins in the 2002 NFL Draft and he piled up over 3,000 yards in Washington and with the Saints before calling it a career in 2010 with 821 carries and 19 total touchdowns.
According to a report from Pete Thamel today, Betts is heading back to Iowa to serve as the program's running backs coach.
Betts had been serving as the head coach at Pine Crest HS (FL), where he led the program to an undefeated season in 2020.
He replaces Derrick Foster, who left the Hawkeyes staff to become the running backs coach for the LA Chargers.
