Northwestern has reportedly reached out to Dave Wannstedt, Skip Holtz (Northwestern)

Northwestern is reportedly kicking the tires on adding a veteran presence to their staff to help lead the program alongside interim head coach David Braun this fall in the wake of Pat Fitzgerald's dismissal.

According to a report from 670 The Score this morning, former veteran NFL coach Dave Wannstedt had conversations with Northwestern about helping the program.

Wannstedt is the former head coach of the Bears and Dolphins who also led Pitt from 2005-2010 to a 42-31 mark.

He most recently coached the special teams for the Bucs in 2013 and was the defensive coordinator for the Bills in 2012.

Wannstedt shared on air that while they had conversations about a coaching role over the weekend, the 71-year old took ultimately decided to take himself out of consideration.

The report also names former East Carolina, Louisiana Tech and USF head coach Skip Holtz as another name the school has reached out to about helping the school during a difficult transition this season.

Holtz has spent the past two seasons in the USFL as the head coach of the Birmingham Stallions, where he has led the team to a 17-3 mark and back-to-back USFL titles and a Coach of the Year award this last season following an 8-2 season.

The school controversially parted ways with 17-year leader Pat Fitzgerald following allegations of hazing within the program last week.
