Mike Sanford, Sr., once again coaching in Las Vegas (Mike Sanford)

Mike Sanford, Sr., has a new coaching job, and it's back in Vegas.

The former UNLV head coach has been hired at Las Vegas' Faith Lutheran High School as the head football coach and associate director of development.

“A combination of things attracted Faith Lutheran to me,” Sanford said. “The first one is the first word in the school — faith. That’s important to me in the way I coach and why I live. The school is committed to competing at the highest level, it’s excellent academically and has a lot of really good people.”

The elder Sanford served as UNLV's head coach from 2005-09, going 16-43 over that 5-season span.

He then spent 2010-11 as the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Louisville, and 2012 as the associate head coach at Utah State.

Sanford returned to the head coaching ranks at Indiana State in 2013, going 18-30 in four seasons. His 2014 team reached the second round of the FCS playoffs.

Sanford then spent 2017-18 as the running backs coach and special teams coordinator on Mike, Jr.'s staff at Western Kentucky.

“From a missionary standpoint, he’s a perfect fit,” Faith Lutheran CEO Steve Buuck said. “He’s a Faith Lutheran guy all the way. Of the 7.5 billion people on Earth, Mike Sanford is the perfect person at Faith Lutheran at this time. You spend five minutes with him, and you know he’s a strong Christian and has great character.”

Faith Lutheran competes in Class 5A, the state's largest classification.
