Paul Rhoads was one of the highest-paid defensive backs coaches in the country at UCLA in 2019. That all tracks, of course, given a résumé that contains Power 5 head coaching experience and a track record of success as both a coordinator and position coach at a number of jobs across a 30-year career.
Rhoads left Westwood in December to become Arizona's defensive coordinator and, as expected, he netted a raise in doing so.
According to documents obtained by Wildcat Authority, Rhoads signed a 2-year contract that will pay him $750,000 in 2020 and $800,000 in 2021. The contract is fully guaranteed.
The contract calls for Rhoads to pay a 25 percent buyout should he leave for another job, but places a non-compete with all other Pac-12 programs.
When factoring in a 35 percent cost of living adjustment between Los Angeles and Tucson, Rhoads essentially doubles the $500,000 he made at UCLA.
The contract represents a significant increase from what Arizona paid the same position last year. Marcel Yates made $560,000 as the Wildcats' defensive coordinator before he was let go on Oct. 27. (Offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone made $600,000). Chuck Cecil served as Arizona's interim defensive coordinator for the season's final month.
Arizona went 4-8 in 2019, Kevin Sumlin's second leading the program.
