The New York Jets' continuing transition into the Robert Saleh era also is prompting a move back to the collegiate level for veteran assistant coach Jeff Hammerschmidt.
The Jets' assistant special teams coordinator for the past five seasons, Hammerschmidt returns to the college game as a special teams analyst for Dino Babers' Syracuse Orange program.
Hammerschmidt had been a long-tenured special teams coach in college, turning a strong run at Colorado State into the opportunity with the Jets.
Additionally, Hammerschmidt has coached in both the Big Ten and the PAC-12.
Hammerschmidt's roots are on the West Coast, where he developed into a standout-prospect in the San Diego-area and was a four-year letter-winner in college at the University of Arizona.
Hammerschmidt earned a pair of all-conference selections with the Wildcats, and he also coached at his alma mater, as well as Stanford. He worked with the Indiana Hoosiers in the Big Ten.
In addition to his special teams duties, Hammerschmidt has coached on both sides of the line of scrimmage. He coached linebackers at Stanford, after having previously served as Montana's defensive coordinator.
Hammerschmidt also has been a running backs coach and worked along the offensive front with the tight end position.
At Syracuse, Hammerschmidt will try to help Babers rekindle the success that had Babers among college football's fastest-rising coaches in the past decade. The Orange are just 6-17 in their past two seasons, including a 1-10 mark in the COVID-marred 2020 season.
