FIU reportedly finalizing deal with ACC assistant as new head coach (Duke)

Before joining the Duke staff, Willie Simmons put together an impressive record as the head coach at Florida A&M.

According to a report this morning, he's set to return to The Sunshine State to lead an FBS program.

Multiple reports share this morning that Simmons and FIU are finalizing a deal for him to lead the Panthers. Ross Dellenger was first with the news.

The opportunity will make his third chance to lead a college football program. In addition to Florida A&M, he spent three years at the helm of Prairie View A&M (FCS - TX) as well.

As the head coach at Florida A&M from 2018-23, Simmons went 45-13. After a 6-5 debut season, he went on to win at least nine games in each of the next four seasons, including a breakout 12-1 campaign in 2023 where they finished among the top 10 nationally.

At Prairie View A&M, he went 21-11 overall, with his best season coming in year one with an 8-2 mark and 2nd place finish in the SWAC.

With FIU, he takes over for veteran college head coach Mike McIntyre, who had stops leading Colorado and San Jose State. MacIntyre spend three seasons leading FIU, going an identical 4-8 in each of those seasons.

Pete Thamel adds that Simmons is getting a four-year deal.
