FCS program opts for unconventional route, elevates off-field staffer to interim head coach (Northern Arizona)

In 98% of cases over the years, interim head coaching moves go to someone that's serving in an on-field position on staff to keep things as normal as possible while a coaching search takes place.

However, the Colts are one team that recently broke that mold when they decided to bring in legendary center Jeff Saturday to serve as their interim head coach for the remainder of the year to end last season.

At the FCS level, Northern Arizona recently decided to end the Chris Ball era after five seasons and a 20-30 overall record.

To fill their interim head coach role, the Lumberjacks have decided to go the unconventional route by elevating an off-field staffer.

Kyle Hofmann, who has been serving as director of recruiting and player personnel for the program, is stepping into the interim head coaching role.

Hofmann is a former Arizona high school coach who has recent stops at Tennessee State (FCS) as the director of recruiting and West Florida (D-II) as director of player personnel and coached specialists as well as the defensive line as well.

With the early signing day right around the corner, the outside-the-box move is likely to preserve the 2024 class and push forward with recruiting while the coaching search continues to play out.
