A West Virginia State football player was shot and killed Wednesday night in Charleston, West Virginia, in an incident that local police are investigating as a homicide.
Jyilek Harrington, a Charlotte, N.C., native, was shot multiple times and died Wednesday night.
West Virginia State had been scheduled to host Carson-Newman University tonight in an NCAA Division II contest.
Both teams agreed to postpone their contest a day.
Initially slated for an 6 p.m. kick tonight, the game now will be played at noon Friday on the West Virginia State campus.
The contest actually pitted Harrington's former team, Carson-Newman, against his current one.
"This was tragic and awful news to receive this morning," Eagles head coach Ashley Ingram said in a statement from Carson-Newman. "We join with West Virginia State in mourning the passing of Jyelik Harrington. We will encourage and lift them up in their time of tragedy."
The teams announced they would host a prayer vigil this evening in lieu of the contest.
Additionally, Carson-Newman announced it will not have a player in a No. 31 jersey -- Harington's former number -- for the contest.
The schools said all previously sold tickets for Thursday night's contest could be utilized for Friday's contest or exchanged for a later home date.
