What Deion Sanders did for HBCU football in terms of exposure and influence in his short time leading the Jackson State program is both undeniable, and immeasurable.
Many expected the brighter light being shone on the HBCU level to translate to more people seeing the level of football being played at that level, and that would equate to more opportunities for HBCU programs on draft day.
Going into the NFL Draft, Coach Prime felt like he and his staff had developed four players at Jackson State that had a really good shot to hear their name called on one of the game's biggest stages.
However, when the draft was all said and done, just one Jackson State player heard his name called.
Isaiah Bolden, a corner and kick returner, was drafted with by the Patriots with their final pick of the draft at number 245.
He also happened to be the only player from an HBCU program drafted at all.
That prompted a tweet from Sanders late last night, expressing how ashamed he was of the majority of the NFL.
After praising Bolden, noting that he deserved to be drafted much higher, Prime added "I'm ashamed of the 31 other @NFL teams that couldn't find draft value in ALL of the talented HBCU players & we had 3 more draft worthy players at JSU."
So proud is you @isaiahbolden23 You deserved to be drafted much higher but I'm truly proud of u. I know how much u want this. I'm ashamed of the 31 other @nfl teams that couldn't find draft value in ALL of the talented HBCU players & we had 3 more draft worthy players at JSU. pic.twitter.com/BfEm3zIGPH

Deion wasn't the only HBCU head coach to express his frustrations.
FAMU head coach Willie Simmons, who coached the highest ranked HBCU player heading into the draft on many boards in outside linebacker Isaiah Land, shared the following tweet as the 7th round of the draft was playing out Saturday night.
Truly a head scratcher at this point!!! π€·πΎββοΈπ€¦πΎββοΈ#NFLDraft

Land ended up signing with the Cowboys as undrafted player shortly after the draft.
