Boise State dismisses Andy Avalos

Update >> The school has announced the move, and that defensive coordinator Spencer Danielson will serve as interim head coach.

Boise State is parting ways with Andy Avalos today, according to a report today.

FootballScoop can confirm that Avalos is out ten games into his third season leading the program.

Pete Thamel originally made the news public.

He was 22-14 in almost three seasons.

Boise State beat New Mexico Saturday to push their record to 5-5 on the season.

Ross Dellenger shares that defensive coordinator Spencer Danielson will serve as interim head coach.

Avalos, who played linebacker for the Broncos from 2001-04, took over the program before the 2021 season and the first-time head coach led them to a 7-5 mark.

They put together a 10-4 campaign in 2022, finishing second in the Mountain West.

Back in 2021, Avalos signed a five-year deal worth $7.75 million, and he made $1.55 million leading the program this season.

Prior to taking over the program, Avalos served as defensive coordinator at Boise State and at Oregon. He also coached the Broncos defensive line and linebackers earlier in his coaching career.

Remaining games for the program at at Utah, and home against Air Force. Boise would need to win them both to get bowl eligible.

Losses in either of those contests would mean Boise State would finish with a losing record for the first time since 1997, when they finished 4-7.

The opening would mean Boise State would join Michigan State, Northwestern, and Texas A&M as current open jobs in FBS.
