This time of year, while names of coaches litter The Scoop for a variety of reasons, it can be easy to lose sight of the impact that really has on all of those involved, both directly and indirectly.
A great reminder of that was on full display during Turner Gill's retirement press conference. Gill announced his retirement earlier this week, saying it's the toughest thing he's ever had to do, while citing a need to be with his wife who was diagnosed with a heart condition back in 2016.
At his retirement presser, Gill got emotional at a number of different points, but especially when talking about how had this was to come to terms with knowing what that it meant uncertainty for his staff and their families, and also his players.
Meeting with his staff was emotional, but Gill notes that meeting with players cut to his core in some ways.
"I know that sometimes," Gill started before needing a few seconds to collect himself, "...players have been let down by their fathers."
"So for me as a coach, to say that I'm retiring, I didn't want them to take it that I've let them down too. I was in their life, and now I'm not going to be in their life in the way that they expected it."
But obviously, to see some disappointments when I made that statement that I'm retiring, to see some of their body language, it hurts. But I have to do what I think is best for me and my wife. It was a very difficult time here, these past few hours."
