First-year UAB head coach Trent Dilfer has played in some incredible environments from his time as a record setting quarterback at Fresno State to his days as an NFL quarterback with the Buccaneers, Ravens, Seahawks, Browns and 49ers.
In Baltimore, after the offense struggled without a touchdown for four straight weeks, he was called in to replace veteran Tony Banks and he helped lead them to seven straight wins and a wild card berth in the playoffs, where they would go on to run the table and win Super Bowl XXXV in a blowout (34-7) over the Giants.
As cool as the Super Bowl is, Dilfer shared in his press conference yesterday as his Blazers get set to take on Georgia that SEC night games are a more impressive environment.
He even puts it ahead of The Super Bowl.
As his Blazers are set play in Athens at night this weekend, you could clearly sense Dilfer's excitement.
His most memorable experience at an SEC night game came as a father. Dilfer has a daughter (Tori - who signed and is playing volleyball at Louisville now) that was getting recruited to play volleyball at Alabama, and one of her recruiting visits was at the Ole Miss vs. Alabama night game, and Dilfer was in awe.
"To this day, I think the Kentucky Derby is the coolest thing I have ever been able to go to, in live sports. I think...it's better than Super Bowls."
"An SEC atmosphere at night is way better than the Super Bowl. I think it's the second coolest thing I have ever been to, as a spectator."
"I am, personally, really excited about going to an SEC game at night. I mean, it's different. Their slogan is "It just means more." It's different, and it's true."
If that's not in the SEC's next commercial they roll out, shame on whoever is in charge of their marketing.
UAB, who enters the game against Georgia - the two-time defending national champions - at 1-2, will kick off in Athens on Saturday night at 7:30p EST.
UAB HC and former NFL QB Trent Dilfer can't wait to take his team to Athens for a primetime SEC environment....
