Sources: West Georgia adding longtime NFL assistant to offensive coaching staff (Stump Mitchell)

Stump Mitchell spent a decade playing in the NFL and nearly two more decades coaching in the league, including a five-year run on staff with the Cleveland Browns that just ended at the conclusion of the 2023 season.

A football lifer, the soon-to-be-66-year-old St. Mary's, Georgia, native, is back in the game.

Sources tell FootballScoop that Mitchell is joining the FCS program West Georgia staff as its running backs coach.

It's a strong move for second-year Wolves coach Joel Taylor, who adds in Mitchell a decorated veteran coach who's been in charge of running backs for the Seattle Seahawks, Washington Commanders, Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets and the Browns.

A former standout collegiate player at The Citadel, Mitchell spent nine seasons as a player for the NFL's Cardinals and one year with the Kansas City Chiefs.

His return to the college game marks the first time in 15 years, when he was head coach at tradition-rich HBCU program Southern in 2010.
