Tennessee State continues to blend big names with rich experience as it assembles Eddie George’s inaugural football staff.
Sources on Friday tell FootballScoop that Pepe Pearson is accepting the position of running backs coach on George’s Tigers’ staff. Pepe, like Eddie George, played running back at the Ohio State University (with Pearson taking over as the featured back in the years following George's time in Columbus).
This comes just 24 hours on the heels of TSU moving closer to finalizing a deal with Hue Jackson to become TSU’s offensive coordinator.
George was formally hired earlier this week by TSU and athletics director Mikki Allen after the school parted ways last weekend with long-time TSU coach Rod Reed.
A former Ohio State player who won Buckeyes team MVP honors in 1997 and 1998 graduate, Pearson has a deep history in college football coaching.
After 10 years on staff at Ohio Dominican, an NCAA Division II program, Pearson logged five-straight years on Doc Holliday’s Marshall Thundering Herd staff as running backs coach.
Between Ohio Dominican and his leap to Marshall, Pearson spent one year on staff at traditional FCS powerhouse Youngstown State.
In addition to Jackson’s expected inclusion as offensive coordinator, George’s TSU staff also is expected to include Brandon Fisher, son of TSU advisor Jeff Fisher, as defensive coordinator and Pro Football Hall of Famer Rod Woodson as secondary coach.
