New program Rio Grande provides Quincy Wilson with second chance to run college football program (Rio Grande)

Before we get started here, University of Rio Grande sounds like the type of program located in Texas, New Mexico or Colorado.

However, if that was your first thought (like it was most certainly mine), you'd be wrong. Not only wrong, but wrong by over 1,000 miles.

University of Rio Grande is located in southeastern Ohio, not far from the state's border with West Virginia. They currently play as part of the NAIA.

The school has had a dormant football program they recently decided to start back up with a target date set for the fall of 2025, and yesterday they tabbed former West Virginia standout Quincy Wilson as their new head coach.

The opportunity marks the second opportunity to run a college football program for Wilson, who previously was tabbed to lead the University of Fort Lauderdale in 2022.

The NCCAA program ended up playing just one game before folding and forfeiting the remainder of their games citing a lack of players.

Wilson spoke on that experience in the announcement of his hire to lead Rio Grande.

"I wanted to be a head coach so bad when I went down there that I ignored all of the red flags of 'we don't have this and we don't have that'. Once I got there, it was a nightmare."

"But I'm looking at that whole situation there to becoming a blessing. It's kind of funny. I was telling everybody, even before the announcement was made, that I'd been on the Rio Grande campus before and said that this would be a great place to have football. Maybe I spoke it into existence."

From 2012-15 Wilson served as the assistant director of football operations for Dana Holgorsen and the Mountaineers.

As he looks to hit the ground running with a fresh start with the Red Storm, the release shares that he's looking to hire his offensive and defensive coordinators first before shifting the focus to filling out the roster.
