Two days after deciding to part ways with defensive coordinator Dave Huxtable, the Wolf Pack have announced their new defensive coordinator.
Tony Gibson, the former West Virginia defensive coordinator, who joined the staff back in January as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach, has been promoted to the defensive play calling role on Dave Doeren's staff.
"I look forward to building our defense with Tony Gibson as the leader," Doeren shared in the school's announcement of the promotion. "He has a strong vision for what we need to do on defense and his knowledge of our personnel and recruits will help us design the structure of our defense around our talent."
Gibson will also move from safeties to linebackers.
Highly regarded as a recruiter, Gibson spent three seasons as associate head coach at WVU and the defensive coordinator for five seasons. He's also worked at Michigan, Arizona, Pitt, and Glenville State (D-II).
His 2016 Mountaineer defense led all of the Big 12 in scoring defense and total defense. Not an easy thing to do in a league dominated by explosive offenses.
He'll be tasked with getting a defense that ranked #83 nationally in scoring defense fixed, as the Wolf Pack allowed just over 30 points per game en route to a 4-8 overall finish and 1-7 mark in ACC play.
