LSU and Ed Orgeron agree to extension (LSU)

Fresh on the heels of their national championship, Ed Orgeron and LSU have agreed to a contract extension. Bruce Feldman was the first to share the news this morning.

LSU has announced the 6-year extension now, adding that it's valued at more than $7 million per year. The base salary is $6 million, and coach O will receive a "$5 million split-dollar life insurance policy payable over the first two years of the agreement," the school's release shares.

"Coach O has set a new standard at LSU," said LSU Athletic Director Scott Woodward. "He has proven that he is not only a championship coach, but also a leader of a program committed to doing things the right way. He has represented our institution and our state with great pride, on and off the field of play. He is well-deserving of this new contract, which should make clear our commitment to Coach O and the direction of our football program."

Orgeron bet on himself with his original deal in Baton Rouge that was heavy in incentives and paid him a base salary of $4 million. The bonus structure allowed him to accumulate an additional $1.775 million for their playoff run and national title, according to Steve Berkowitz's research.

Since taking over at LSU, Orgeron is 40-9 overall with an incredible 11-1 mark in his last 12 games against top 10 teams.

This off season, Orgeron is faced with replacing passing game coordinator and Broyles Award winner Joe Brady (who left for the Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator job), as well as defensive coordinator Dave Aranda (who left to become the head coach at Baylor).

A whole lot of eyes will be on who Orgeron brings in to fill those two roles.
