Update >> This is now official. Brian Smith has been formally announced as the new head coach of the Bobcats.
Tim Albin rose to the head coaching position at Ohio after previously serving as the team's offensive coordinator under Frank Solich.
He left the Bobcats for the head coaching opportunity at Charlotte after going an impressive 33-19 with three-straight 10-win seasons to his credit after a 3-9 debut season at the helm.
Now, Ohio is set to repeat the move that put the program on an upward trajectory.
Brian Smith, who has been with the program since 2022, initially as pass game coordinator before being named offensive coordinator before this fall, is the target to replace Albin atop the Bobcats program, Pete Thamel shares.
Sources tell FootballScoop this deal is done, Brian Smith will be the new head coach.
Earlier this week, we shared Smith was a strong candidate to land the job.
Smith ascends to the role after previously serving as an offensive coordinator at Hawaii and Washington State under Nick Rolovich.
Many thought that Smith would be the choice to succeed Rolo after he left Hawaii for Washington State, but the administration decided to go with Todd Graham instead despite him serving as an assistant for the Warriors three different times.
Now, the 44-year old is poised to take over one of the strongest programs in the MAC, and one of the stronger Group of Five programs in college football.
Ohio plays Friday morning against Jacksonville State in Orlando.
