Weber State and head coach Jay Hill have agreed to a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the school through the 2025 season.
Hill took on the rebuild at Weber State back 2014 after spending over a decade working in a variety of roles at Utah. He inherited a program that won just two games the year before his arrival, and he's quickly built them into an FCS contender in his head coaching debut.
From 2001-2013, Hill worked in a variety of roles for the Utes program including special teams coordinator from 2007-13 while also spending time coaching the tight ends, corners, and running backs after starting off as a graduate assistant. He played corner for the Utes in 1998 and 1999 before starting his coaching career there shortly thereafter.
In year one of the rebuild, Hill went 2-10 he's led impressive strides to 6-5 and then 7-5 with a playoff berth before hitting double-digit wins
In 2017, year four of Hill's tenure, Weber State won 11 games, finished tied for first in the Big Sky, and lost in the FCS quarterfinals. In 2019 they made a run to the semis before bowing out. The last three seasons, Weber State has finished in the top five nationally, including the highest ranking in school history, finishing #3 nationally after the 2019 season.
In the school's announcement of the extension, Hill shared:
"I am super excited about the direction of our program, what we have accomplished and where we are heading. Weber State is a very special place to me and I couldn't be happier with the way our administration has backed me in building a championship program."
Athletic director Tim Crompton applauded the job that Hill has done, as the Wildcats are ranked in the top five in a number of FCS rankings heading into their spring season, adding that Hill is an elite coach in his comments in the release.
Hill is 47-29 overall with the Wildcats. Take out that initial 2-10 year and he's an impressive 45-19, which would certainly merit "elite" conversation.
At just 45 years old, Hill's proven ability to build a winner is bound continue to come up in the conversation for FBS jobs.
