There's an old adage in the coaching profession that there are two things that every man in America thinks they can do better than you - man a grill (or smoker), and coach.
That first one, just ask Lincoln Riley about sometime.
As for the second one, there is no shortage of threads online with people ranging from accomplished coaches to glorified armchair quarterbacks who would get circles ran around them in the worst youth leagues thinking their opinion matters on the internet to someone, somewhere wanting to argue about technique, play calling, personnel, scheme, or anything in between.
So what I came across yesterday should really come as no surprise, yet still I was taken aback.
As South Carolina opened up spring practices, a clip of an offensive line drill being led by first-year Gamecocks offensive line coach Randy Clements was going viral and dividing the folks viewing it.
Before we get to the clip, it's worth noting Clements landed on Shane Beamer's staff at South Carolina bringing 35 years of coaching experience, and 23 seasons working with offensive lines at the college level. The post in Columbia came as a result of Kendall Briles landing the Gamecocks offensive coordinator job, as the two have worked together a number of stops previously and previous stops in college football for Clements include North Carolina, North Texas, Ole Miss, Florida State, Houston, and Baylor among a few others.
Now, does that type of experience make someone immune from criticism? Absolutely not. But it's not unreasonable to believe any critique's should come with a modicum of respect, and that certainly seemed to be lacking in some online feedback
Below is the clip that hundreds of folks (both non-coaches as well as coaches and former college and NFL offensive lineman) felt compelled to weigh in on that has well over a million views in just over 24 hours.

You don't have to look long to find the criticisms that bubbled up, nearly all of which were based in variations of "show me where this shows up on the game film or this is a waste of time" ranging from:
"As an o line coach...what lol" - A Club Football OL coach
"Now put a DLineman there to push them over since they're so unbalanced." - via some guy that lists himself as 1% serious in his X bio.
"What a stupid drill" - via someone whose X bio reads in part (you can't make this up) - "Not every conversation needs your participation"
"WHY???" - via accomplished trainer of NFL offensive lineman
"Feels like a time wasting drill. What is the purpose of this?" - via a former NFL OL that spent 8 years in the league.
There were a few positive ones sprinkled in there as well, but the ratio was definitely tipped toward the negative.
What I love most about this, was the response after practice from Clements that was equal parts humble, while also being both calculated and measured.
