It was a watch unlike the coaching profession, and maybe even the country, had ever seen.
As the regular season came to an end, and then the SEC title game played out between Georgia and Alabama, the speculation on whether Lane Kiffin would remain at Ole Miss for the team's College Football Playoff run or if he would leave to become the head coach at LSU was a storyline the nation watched in a way that it felt like the nation hadn't witnessed since the OJ Simpson murder trial.
After the very public back and forth about whether Kiffin would be able to stay and coach the Rebs through the playoff, Kiffin appeared at his introductory press conference at LSU and shared a very brief mention of a conversation with Nick Saban that led him to taking the Tigers head coaching job. Saban also alluded to his advice on the set of College GameDay a few times as well. But what exactly was said was shrouded in mystery, leaving falls to fill-in-the-blanks.
That is, until yesterday.
While speaking at a Leadership Power Breakfast in Baton Rouge, Kiffin opened up a bit more about the advice given to him by Saban, who won a national title with the Tigers in 2003 before going on to win another six is Tuscaloosa with the rival Crimson Tide - one of those with Kiffin as his offensive coordinator.
"I know I keep saying it, but it was just different. The feeling was different, and as I sat there - and I told this story in my press conference - I was torn. When I called coach Saban, he said 'You will always regret if you don't go to LSU. It's the best job in America.'"
"When he said that, that really made the decision for me," Kiffin would go on to explain.
"As I have looked at it, it has pushed me. It has gotten me out of the comfort zone that we were doing amazing things, but when you come here you can feel the power of the place and it drives you every day that you can go to another level."
